ALGA is a professional organization committed to supporting and improving local government auditing through advocacy, collaboration, education and training, while upholding the highest standards of professional ethics.
ALGA was formed in 1989 and has enjoyed a growing membership. There are more than 300 organizational members and over 2,000 individual members of ALGA. Our membership represents a wide diversity of local government audit organizations ranging from one-person audit shops to others with more than 75 professionals. The Directors of some of our member organizations are elected and others are appointed. Our members audit cities, counties, and service districts, such as schools, transportation, and water. We also encourage associate memberships for auditors working in state and federal organizations as well as private auditing firms. We provide information to assist our members whether they are audit directors, managers or staff in conducting financial as well as performance audits.

| Quarterly |
Each member receives a copy of our Local Government Auditing Quarterly. The quarterly provides important information about government auditing issues, and articles about local government audit organizations. The quarterly also lets members know about audits of other members in areas of interest to them. Each quarterly describes findings and methods of audits in public safety, social services, revenues, and other important areas.

Annual
Conference |
Every year ALGA presents a conference for local government auditors. The conference provides continuing professional education training credits, but most importantly, encourages interchanges of practical information and experience among the auditors. Small group discussions on issues pertinent to local government auditing are mixed with presentations from nationally recognized speakers. Attendees have consistently rated the conferences as the most valuable and least expensive learning experience they receive. The conference location moves to different parts of the country to encourage access to new audit organizations. Recent conferences have been held in Memphis, San Jose, Milwaukee, Richmond, Toronto, Lake Tahoe, Long Beach and New Orleans. Members receive discounted registration fees to the conference and workshops.
|
| Peer Reviews |
Through its peer review program, including the peer review guide, ALGA assists local government auditors in complying with Government Auditing Standards (Yellow Book) and/or International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing (Red Book). ALGA members are organized and trained to conduct high-quality peer reviews of member organizations for much lower costs than contracted reviews. Program participants have consistently indicated the highest level of satisfaction with their ALGA peer review experience.
|
| Representation |
Through its committees comprised of volunteer members, ALGA advocates for local government auditing and provides industry representation on emerging issues with other professional management, accounting and finance organizations. ALGA is often invited to provide a local government perspective in reviewing and commenting upon draft audit standards issued by governing agencies or other professional audit organizations.
