Free CPE Opportunity!!!
“Quarterly Quizzers”
By the ALGA Education Committee
No kidding! Starting with this edition, you will be able to obtain one credit of CPE that will qualify for Yellow Book purposes under Government Auditing Standards just by reading your Local Government Auditing Quarterly! That’s right, just read the articles and take a brief Quizzer. The Quizzer is available
only on the ALGA website and is no cost to you. You can repeat the process with each Quarterly for another CPE credit.
You have probably always been aware that the Quarterly contains some of the best technical information available to local government auditors. This information is contained in articles written by people who do what you do, and who want to share with you what they have learned. They have taken the time to
tell you about techniques, approaches, and all manner of things that work – or that don’t work – in the quest to make you a more effective auditor.
The ALGA Education Committee took on the task of finding ways to provide more cost-effective, high quality training to ALGA members. The Committee quickly determined that if other professional organizations can use their journals as a vehicle for providing CPE to members, ALGA
could do the same. With one big difference from the approach most organizations take: ALGA’s Board of Directors determined that CPE based on the Quarterly should be offered as a member benefit.
There is no charge to you outside of your annual ALGA membership dues. Each Quarterly will include a set of questions based on articles from a previous Quarterly, i.e. this Quarterly contains a Quizzer with a set of questions for the December 2003 Quarterly. Don’t worry. If you’ve misplaced or lost your Quarterly, the questions are based on articles that appear on the website.
To take the Quizzer, go to the ALGA website (www.governmentauditors.org) and click on the link. You will need to login using the current user name and password. You will be able to answer the Quizzer for up to one year after the original publication date of the article in the Quarterly.
The Education Committee has time tested the process, worked with authors to develop appropriate questions, coordinated with ALGA member services and the Quarterly editor to ensure you a smooth, highly automated process. All you have to do is read the articles, review the questions, log on to
the website and correctly answer the questions to obtain a certificate for one credit of CPE for each quarter. More detailed instructions are available on the website. This member benefit is only available online; no fax or mailed copies will be accepted.
The Quizzers qualify for CPE under the Government Audit Standards. A certificate of completion will be provided to you within 10 business days of completing the quiz. It is your responsibility to retain the records necessary to verify that you successfully completed each Quizzer that you request CPE credit for.
The technical requirements for national CPA sponsorship of journal-based courses are such that ALGA cannot and does not ensure that the quizzers will meet the CPE requirements for CPA licenses or designations of other professional associations. Based on the rules of your state board of
accountancy or professional association, you will need to make that determination.
The Education Committee hopes that you will find the Quizzer process helpful and user-friendly. We would like to hear from you for any feedback related to the process. To provide feedback, please contact one of the Education Committee members (contact information is provided in the membership directory and on the ALGA website).
Good luck with the Quizzers!
