The ALGA Quarterly: Continuing a Tradition of Excellence while Pursuing Innovation - June 2006 Print E-mail

Local government auditors occupy special niches in the world of auditing; we are scattered all around the globe within small units serving relatively small public entities.  Despite the limits of proximity, our sizes and functions are remarkably similar. These similarities allow us to share our methods, ideas, and information so that we can improve the quality of the work that we do.
This professional camaraderie and transferal of knowledge and can be helped or hindered by the means of communication.  While I do not believe that auditors should promote style over substance, I do feel that professional communication should look professional.  Sound planning, clear and consistent design work, standardization of written material, and clever usage of technology can help to make a publication look as good as the authors of the abstracts or articles intend.  When an audit report looks like it was written by amateurs, then the outcome is usually amateurish.

As professional public servants and administrators, we are duty bound to serve the public to the best of our ability.  We do that by availing ourselves of every resource at our disposal to maximize the impact of our work.  The ALGA Quarterly is a valuable reference for audit managers and auditors alike.  As editor, I hope to make this publication even more useful to you.

The Communications Committee has been working to assess the needs of ALGA’s membership and determine the best mixture of content within each issue.  The September issue will have a new cover and design template.  This issue will be officially called the ALGA Quarterly.  We will also develop a revised internal style guide to aid authors in the formatting of submissions.

We look forward to hearing your input about the new look and feel of the publication and the new website.  But as always, the most important thing is the quality and the impact of the auditing work you do for your governmental organizations every day.  We hope to capture small snapshots of the work you do in a useful and flattering way.

Doug Whitworth, Austin, Texas
