As the calendar year draws to a close, we can allow ourselves time to reflect upon our lives and our work. Many of us are fortunate enough to have many points of intersection between our lives and our work—none more so than the contributing writers of this edition of the Local Government Auditing Quarterly (LGAQ).
In this issue, our writers have described ways in which their auditing skills have aided in their volunteer work with non-profits while others have found parallels between football and audit work. This diversity of experiences and opinions within our membership is an organizational strength.
One way in which we continue to grow and develop as government professionals by looking to others to provide examples or counter-examples for our own work. The work described in this journal helps to put things into perspective by providing a context in which we all work. Some of us concern ourselves with strategic planning; others focus upon technical components of auditing. But all of us contribute to the body of knowledge that helps to provide a process of continuous improvement for the organizations that we serve.
Another way in which this journal may serve its members is by providing a forum for announcements from the Association of Local Government Auditors (ALGA). In this issue we are announcing the 2006 Knighton Awards Program and accepting nominations for several positions on the ALGA Board of Directors. We also describe yellow book revisions, results of peer reviews, and changes in student membership policies.
In the near future, we hope to include a section describing the comings and goings in all our audit shops. Whether it is the retirement of a long-serving auditor or the addition of an important new staff member, this journal may be able to include a listing of the changes that have been taking place across the country. This way, we will be able to monitor the career paths of our peers while we read about their work in the abstracts section. You can help by submitting member news to
