What's Happening With Peer Review? - September 2004 Print E-mail

The peer review committee has revised ALGA’s Peer Review Guide to reflect changes in Government Auditing Standards (2003 Revision) and a few administrative changes to the program. Member Services mailed the updated Guide – now on CD thanks to Glenda – to member organizations this summer. The Guide is also available on ALGA’s website. We invite you to take a look at the updated Guide and, as always, we welcome your questions and comments.

We really appreciate the feedback we got from members during the revision process, as well as the technical assistance from Member Services and our webmaster, Gary Blackmer. Committee members also thank our fearless leader, outgoing chair Jim Williamson, who has an amazing capacity to make hard work and arguments on esoteric topics fun, and outgoing members Joanne Griggs and Doug Norman who designed and nurtured what has become a model program.

Looking ahead to this year, the Board has requested that we investigate expanding the peer review program to assess compliance with other standards that member shops might follow – such as IIA standards. Doug Jenkins and Jerry Shaubel provide a colorful discussion about the merits of expanding the peer review program in Point-Counterpoint. (Truthfully, I haven’t seen their articles yet, but I’ve heard lots of colorful discussion). Since we want to hear your opinions too, we’ll be sending an email survey to member organizations to find out what standards shops are following and whether members are interested in expanding the peer review program. Please watch for the survey and let us know what you think.

The peer review committee will also be reviewing and updating our publications, including What Small Shops Should Know and The New Independence Standard, as well as the tools we offer on the web site. We are collaborating with the professional issues committee to help provide guidance on issues that members care about. Finally, of course, we will be conducting peer reviews. We coordinated 19 peer reviews for member organizations last year and encourage more member organizations to undergo peer review in the coming year.

Amanda Noble is an Audit Manager with the Kansas City Auditor's Office.
